  1. Novell Announces First Multi-Protocol Router on NetWare Platform

  3. Novell Software Allows User to Build Low-Cost Platform Independent Routers

  5. SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Jan. 28, 1992 -- Novell today announced the release of
  6. NetWare Multi-Protocol Router v1.0, providing customers with a low-cost,
  7. hardware independent, standalone router solution built on off-the-shelf PC
  8. platforms.

  10. "By providing a non-proprietary, hardware independent, software-based routing
  11. product, Novell is helping customers expand their networks using software and
  12. hardware they understand," said Navin Jain, vice-president and general manager
  13. of Novell's Internetworking Products Division.  A router is a device used to
  14. interconnect two networks within a local area or across wide area links.

  16. "This solution allows customers the flexibility they need when building large
  17. networks," says Jain.  For small networks, Novell routing software can be used
  18. on low-cost PC systems. For large networks with high performance applications,
  19. Novell routing software can be used on the latest high performance computer
  20. systems available.

  22. An advantage of going with a software-based router product is the ability to
  23. quickly and easily maintain and upgrade routers. Because Novell's routers have
  24. been implemented as NLMs, the router software is "hot-swapable". Customers can
  25. remotely add new NLM routing capability without bringing down or disrupting
  26. other protocols. When customers need higher performance, the router software
  27. can be removed from the old PC system and reinstalled on a new, higher
  28. performance platform. The old hardware can then be converted to a desktop
  29. computer. "That means customer preserve their investment in both hardware and
  30. software as their networks grow," says Jain.

  32. Novell's Multi-Protocol Routers support IPX, IP and AppleTalk on Ethernet,
  33. Token Ring, LocalTalk and ARCnet. The new routers also work with Novell's
  34. Link/TI and Link/64 products for high speed wide area connectivity.

  36. The Multi-Protocol Routers v1.0 are based on NetWare Runtime, which was also
  37. announced today. With the introduction of Novell's standalone routers and
  38. NetWare Hub Services, another Novell product announced today, users intergrate
  39. their router services with hub services to build a powerful, intergrated
  40. connectivity server.

  42. Intel Sees Development Opportunity in Novell's Software-based Routers
  43. "Novell's router software provides an excellent way to enhance the role of the
  44. PC and PC networks for company-wide computing," says James Flach, co-general
  45. manager of Intel's PC Enhancement Division. "The Router opens up exciting
  46. possibilities for product development at Intel."

  48. Improved Price/Performance and Ease-of-Use, say Compaq and Microdyne
  49. "With Novell's routing software on Compaq's System Pro family, our customers
  50. will be able to choose the price/performance ratio that is just right for
  51. their needs," says Ronnie Ward, Director of Novell Systems at Compaq.

  53. "Novell is again leading the way in the networking marketplace by offering
  54. server-based routers," says Phil Cunningham, President of Microdyne. "We're
  55. going to offer pre-configured affordable systems which will follow our plug
  56. and play' product strategy. Customers will be up and running within minutes of
  57. opening the box."

  61. Novell's NetWare Multi-Protocol Routers will be available through Novell
  62. authorized Gold and Platinum resellers beginning late February. The product
  63. will list for US$995. Pricing applies in the United States and Canada only.
